The World Health Organization defined burnout as “a syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

According to this definition, individuals suffering from burnout are said to experience feelings of exhaustion, increased mental distance, demotivation and cynicism about one’s job, and reduced professional efficacy. It is also important to note that burnout, as defined by WHO is caused solely by stressors at the workplace.

Burnout is a risk for anyone, and it is essential to address it in all work environments. It can often result from a lack of awareness or experience on the part of leadership.

How do you identify the working environment that offers a good foundation to take care of its people?
Most of the time, this vital question doesn’t cross our minds, but it should.
In addition to consistently producing a high-quality product, leadership should prioritise creating a productive work environment where employees feel comfortable, motivated, and fulfilled.

In order to keep their engagement and energy levels high, developers need to be regularly challenged and rewarded through the completion of small, focused tasks. A sense of accomplishment and satisfaction is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance and avoiding burnout.
In the end, incentives play a role in motivating individuals to perform their best.

Facing large, daunting tasks without a clear roadmap can lead to a decline in motivation and productivity.

Burnout usually happens when

  • There is excessive focus on large tasks without small milestones (for example, poorly planned refactorings, etc.).
  • The developers don’t share the same perspective on the tasks
  • A working environment is filled with a toxic atmosphere; for example, bullying
  • Micromanagement, disregarding employees’ point of view — undermining their role
  • Over control

Can you identify how many times you have been given the appreciation in the form of at least good words for your work? Are you also contributing enough to share a positive vibe?
Are your comfortable expressing your opinion freely without repercussions?
Do your tasks provide motivation and fulfilment? How often do you feel pride in your achievements?
